<p class="callout info">A permanent redirect, like a 301, is used for URLs that have moved forever, sending users and search engines to the new location and transferring the old page's SEO value. A temporary redirect, like a 302, is for short-term moves, signalling that the original URL may return later and therefore keeping it indexed. </p>
